sneak peek Triangulations chapt. 10
Thanks, everyone, for all your support and pestering. I haven't given up on Triangulations, really. I swear! My life has been really sucky lately, including the death of a very close friend and mentor, brake failure on my car (only $1200 in repairs since one part was still under warranty) and a minor "candle accident" (you know how they say polar fleece burns really fast? No shit. But no worries, only the house was damaged. I'm fine.) Sooo. I am currently working ten hour days, six days a week, as it is the busiest time of the year at the non-profit I work for AND I was stupid enough to put myself on the search committe as we look for a new executive director. I am also trying to figure out when I am going to have time to fix the floor, wall and ceiling after my little house fire.

Ah, but enough whining. I wanted to reward ya'all with a little taste of what is to come since you have been so loyal and devoted.

So here it is, a first (and unfortunately rather short) taste of chapter 10.

"Hey, Mac. Nice digs." Veronica surveyed the office Mac was still moving into. The address had surprised Veronica a little, fifteenth floor in one of Neptune's only glass towers, smack in the middle of the financial district.

"Thanks," Mac blushed. The office was not really her style, but it gave off the image she wanted to project to her clients. Modern, technologically advanced, and coldly impersonal. She'd choose the homey and colorful offices of Mars and Athena any day, but that just didn't cut it in her business. People expected technology to look clean and shiny, like something out of a Spielberg movie, at least if they wanted it to protect their company. And planned to pay out the big bucks for it.

"I brought an office warming gift," Veronica held up a plant, a healing aloe if Mac was not mistaken. Trust V to give a gift that was both a cliche and a witty joke. "And a job," Veronica added. "Is there a discount for being the first in the door?"

"Always looking for discounts," said Mac, shaking her head ruefully, a twinkle in her eye. "I'm surprised you're not trying to barter a chicken and a month's eggs."

"Logan's the one who likes payment in poultry, I usually go for the old 'bond of friendship with a side of heavy guilt.'" Veronica gave Mac a wide-eyed blink as she laughed.

"And a head tilt for good measure. How can I resist?" Mac motioned to the chairs covered in boxes. One of the reasons she was starting her own business was to be pulled back into the intensity of a Mars orbit. Life in the Valley had bored her to tears. "Sit. Tell me what's up."

Veronica moved a crate of picture frames and desk do-dads off the seat. One photo caught her eye - a shot of Gina, Mac and herself done up Western style. Veronica smiled and held it up for Mac. "I had this one displayed all through my Academy years... It's in our living room now. I've always found it...inspirational." Her grin turned wicked and she winked.

"We woulda kicked ass in the Old West," agreed Mac, taking a seat behind the desk. "Well, you and Gina would have. I would have probably been working in the telegraph office." They both laughed.

"Gina would have been running the saloon, don't you think?" smirked Veronica, touching the flounces on the period whore dress Gina had chosen, one leg bared to show her thigh holster. Veronica and Mac had gone a little more manly in the chaps, though V was showing a some cleavage with her tight leather vest.

"Or the brothel," laughed Mac. "And you would have followed in your Daddy's footsteps and become the Sheriff."

"Wouldn't touch that with a ten foot pole," argued Veronica. "Logan would probably be robbing banks with his outlaw buddies, and I wouldn't want to be the one to bring him in."

"So what trouble has he gotten into now?" asked Mac, quirking an eyebrow. "That comment on the outlaw buddies was just a little too heartfelt."

"We need you to prove that an embezzling case was faked..." Veronica said hesitantly.

Mac eyed her curiously. Robbing banks apparently wasn't a metaphor. Though if Veronica wanted her involved, there was clearly more going on than your average theft. "And asking me to do this makes you nervous... why?"

Veroncia sighed. "Because it's for your favorite asshat and mine, Dick Cassablancas." She kept her features bland, unsure how Mac would react to the name from the past.

"Can't they just give him an IQ test and prove that he's not capable of intelligent planning?" snarked Mac. She would admit she had spent far too much time mulling over her feelings for the younger Casablancas over the years, but she had barely given the older a thought.

Veronica sighed. "It's for his... fiance. She was his wife's accountant."

"Whoa." Mac's eyes were wide. "I think I need a little more back story here. Dick is divorcing Dragon Lady? And marrying her accountant?" Dick's wife had made quite an impression at the wedding.

"Yep. And said accountant is going to be multiplying some time soon." Veronica shook her head. "Dick's been involved with her for a while, and decided to divorce the Dragon Lady when he found out he was to be a proud papa. Unfortunately, he didn't realize the Dragon breathes some heavy fire."

"Wow. So what's her name - " Mac was trying to put a name to the wealthy socialite that held the leash on Dick Casablancas, Boy Toy.

"Mimi." Veronica stretched the syllables and wiggled her shoulders a little.

"Yeah, Mimi." Mac twitched a little, trying not to take pleasure in other's misfortune. She truly believed in karma, and Dick as boy toy was living proof. "Mimi set it up to look like the accountant was embezzling?" She paused as she thought over the rest of the bomb shell. "And Dick is... reproducing?" Mac shuddered.

"Bingo." Veronica tilted her head and smiled, though there was no pleasure in the expression. "Of course Mimi is way smarter than Dick. My guess is, she knew about the affair all along. From what I've seen of the evidence, it shows a genuine time lapse. She siphoned her own money into an offshore account, and then when Dick came to her for the divorce, she transferred just enough into Mindy's stateside account to complete the trail."

"So what do you want me to do?" Mac was wary of the too perky look on Veronica's face. Logan had clearly maneuvered her into this, probably with a load of fudge and whipped cream and x-rated nakedness, and Mac was not too sure she wanted to be a part of it. After all, karma was karma and Casablancas were Casablancas.

"Well, I was hoping you could go in as our security expert and examine the evidence, find the place the story breaks down." Veronica smiled what she hoped appeared to be a cheerful smile, and threw in one more head tilt. "All expense paid trip to New York City."

"Are you coming with?" Mac couldn't imagine having to interact directly with Dick after all of these years. They had studiously avoided each other at the wedding, by mutual agreement. Still, buddy time in the Big Apple would be fun. Shannon might even be able to drive up from DC.

Veronica sighed. She really didn't want to go to New York, in August, to see Dick. But it would help to be there, and maybe she could time it to coincide with Logan's trip to New Mexico. And clearly Mac needed more compelling reasons to go than helping a wayward Casablancas. "Yeah, for a few days at least."

"Then I'm in. Can you handle the reservations? I've got to get things in order here." Mac stretched out her hand to shake on it.

"Leave Monday morning?" asked Veronica, mentally calculating all that needed to happen in that time. Four short days. She could just about do it, if Tori was willing to put some extra hours in over the weekend.

Mac frowned, then shrugged and grinned. "I should know you always demand top priority. I'm gonna have to keep my flight bag packed now that I'm back in town, aren't I?"

Veronica smiled a truly genuine smile. "It's good to have you back, little Macky."

"Vee-ron-ica Maaaaaars," drawled the figured sprawled amidst the bubbles in the tub. "So lovely to see you again. I was beginning to think you forgot about little old me."

"Lilly?" Veronica asked, confused. "Lilly, what are you doing in my bathroom?" Veronica glanced around the room and realized it was not her familiar bathroom at all. It looked like a cross between Elton's dream home and a Vegas suite - or maybe the set of a dirty Vegas show. The glass tub Lilly was now draping herself over was shaped remarkably like a martini glass, and it sat raised on a dais of black marble. The room was trimmed out in gold and mirrors, giving the impression of a high priced bordello.

"The water's fabulous, Mars. You should join me." Lilly kicked one perfectly waxed leg in the air, showing off immaculately red toe nails that gleamed like rubies. She flashed Veronica her trademarked wild girl grin and winked. "I know Logan's the possessive type, but trust me when I say he'd forgive us as long as I let the images seep into his dreams, too."

"Lilly!" admonished Veronica, feeling the familiar twin sensations of amusement and shock. God, she had missed Lilly despite her many flaws. "I'm not - "

"You may be married, but I'm the dead one..." Lilly teased, then batted her eyelashes. "That's not quite how the saying goes, is it? I'm supposed to remind you that you're not dead. Come on, Veronica. Aren't you a little curious?" Lilly stroked her bare leg invitingly, then crooked her finger in the classic come hither gesture.

"You've come back from the dead for a little girl on girl action?" Veronica asked, amused. "Is that really allowed?" She looked around. "Are you sure this isn't Logan's dream?"

"Oh you know me," Lilly said with a raised eyebrow and a knowing smile. "I can always find a way to bend the rules to suit myself. We can invite the old man if you like..." she purred. "I'm sure it would be quite amusing, though you'll have to change the sheets." She winked.

"Lilly, I love you like a sister and there is no way I am getting into a bubble bath martini with you," said Veronica with an eye roll. "Even if you think it will give my husband wet dreams."

"Ah, it's just as well," Lilly sighed, and suddenly she was dressed in a smart designer pantsuit and seated on a leather couch in a tastefully decorated office. "Bubble baths just give a girl yeast infections anyway, and even though I am way beyond that, it could still be a problem for you." Veronica choked out a laugh at Lilly's typically blunt comment, trying to get a grip on what was going on. A dream. Of course. It was a crazy, fun Lilly dream. Hold on for the ride, boys and girls.

That settled, Veronica studied the changed decor. She was reminded of the offices of the Hollywood power brokers Logan had been dealing with lately. A glance out the window showed the glittering skyline of LA. What was Lilly doing in Hollywood? Was this anything more than just a mental blip, a neuron firing off a piece of memory with a new twist? Veronica felt the old tug in her brain, like she was missing a very important clue.

"I love you like a sister, too, Veronica, even if you did dump my brother and decide to shack up with the love of my life." Lilly's voice held a surprisingly serious edge. Veronica was speechless, her mouth hanging open. Lilly chuckled and smiled after a minute. "Kidding, dork. It's not like Logan had much competition in the Great Love category, though damn, Weevil tried. If I would have lived longer, who knows? The bad boy with the heart of gold - version 2.0 - might have won me over. And who can blame you for dumping the Donut? Boring with a capital B." Her eyes twinkled. "Though I must say, he's shown himself to be a little ballsier than I could have expected. Who knew he'd go all Sicilian and avenge my death like that?"

"Is that why you're here? Because we found out about Duncan..." That made sense. Lilly had been on Veronica's mind again lately, ever since Duncan had come back really. But especially since he had confessed to paying for the hit on Aaron Echolls. Lilly was just here in her dreams for a little closure.

"Duncan can take care of himself," Lilly said, waving her hand dismissively. "I'm more worried about you." Lilly patted a script that was sitting beside her on the sofa. "Just came back from revision and they dumped the happy ending. I'm worried about you, babe. But don't worry, I still have some clout in this town, and I'm gonna push for the good stuff. Now come give me a kiss before you go."

Lilly stood and pulled Veronica into a Hollywood style embrace, air-kissing beside her cheek. "Don't be a stranger..." Lilly whispered. Any further messages were interrupted by Gregg Allman's loud crooning in Veronica's ear. The room was suddenly far too empty.

I'm no angel...

Veronica opened her eyes blearily and fumbled for the off button on the alarm clock. As her brain filtered back to reality, she smiled. Wacky dream visits from Lilly were almost par for the course, and as long as Lilly showed herself healthy and happy, Veronica wasn't going to complain. Though that last bit had been a little troubling, and Veronica still had that itchy unsolved mystery feeling.

I might steal your diamonds, but I'll bring you back some gold...

Was Lilly trying to give one final message through the radio? Veronica found the button to end her morning misery, and she poked Logan in the shoulder. "No more eighties station for wake-up music," she said. "I want the ocean noises back."

"Hmmm," Logan said, rolling over and trapping Veronica under him. "Ocean noises make me have to pee. Eighties music makes me want to..." He nuzzled suggestively into her neck, and rubbed his erection against her belly. "You decide."

"Eighties music it is," Veronica agreed with a moan, Lilly dream almost completely forgotten in the haze of desire she felt for her husband. "Cue it up, baby."

Seriously. My heart stopped for a moment. So sorry that RL is kicking your ass. Soooo glad that writing is a stress reliever. Love the tease with Mac--yeah--and Lilly!!!! Lilly worried about the happy ending being dumped. Noooo! Of course, it can't be a chapter without LV sex at the end. "Cue it up, baby." Love that line. Thanks for this tease I still love, love, love your writing.

Hey, you're welcome. I figured you guys were owed a little something for your devotion. Seriously. Hopefully I'll get it together for a real chapter soon. Life should get easier after this week, and my sister has scheduled us for a 3 day spa weekend at the end of the month! Maybe that will rewire my brain to be creative again.

Thanks for keeping this alive with your occasional comments and support. And pictures! I don't always respond, but I do appreciate it. :)

OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG!!!! Triangulations lives!!!! SQUEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!
Ahem, sorry 'bout that. Got a little overexcited.

So, it's been so long that I almost completely forget everything that has happened in FC and this. I was like Gina? Shannon? Who are these ppl? But towards the end, it all started coming back. Hopefully by the time the non sneak peek Chap10 is posted, I'll have had time to reread everything again.

Sorry real life is kicking your ass. I'd go give it a swift kick back for you, but I don't think I can work that out over an internet connection.
Olivia Bliviousgertinator on August 13th, 2007 05:21 am (UTC)
I think *I* need to reread everything. It's so funny to go back and go, "OMG I wrote that!" Makes me proud and just a little impressed with myself :)

I am actually doing surprisingly well for how life has been kicking my ass :) Very little free time, but it's funny how when things get shittiest, a person is reminded of all the support they generally take for granted. I certainly am appreciating all the great people in my life right now.

Thanks for the SQUEE and so glad you enjoyed the sneak peek.

I wish your RL wasn't so sucky and hope your luck turns around soon.

I'm so happy to see this updated, I literally started to clap my hands when I saw the green socks!

I adore how Lilly made an appearance and the conversation between her and Veronica.

80s music all the way :)

So glad to see you are still working on this. I have enjoyed it so much so far and all of your stories. You are a great writer.

I'm so sorry for all your difficulties and tragedies of late. I have been going through a similar time although thankfully my friend who was in a horrific car accident made it out of critical condition. It will be a very long recovery of physical and speech therapy and we still don't know if she is still going to be the girl we knew, but she is alive, thank God.

I don't know that I have ever posted a comment or corresponded with you before, but if you ever need to vent to someone who knows how it feels, send me a message. Happy to be there for you.
Olivia Bliviousgertinator on August 13th, 2007 05:32 am (UTC)
Re: Yea!!!
My friend/mentor had lung cancer and was on the older side, so it wasn't as shocking or unexpected as a car crash. I had a close friend suffer brain damage in a crash just before our graduation in college, so I've been on that side of things too. He's doing okay now, but he doesn't remember me from before the accident (even though we were up 'til 4 AM talking the night before it happened.) He'll never be the person he was, though the person he is now is good too, and as you say, at least he is alive. Anyway, I feel you on that. (I actually pulled a little of my Logan car crash in FC from my own experience.)

Are you an Aquarius? Because I have become convinced it is planetary, the number of things going apeshit crazy in my life right now. (I find that is the easiest way to deal - blame the planets, over which I have absolutely no control.) I actually had a horoscope say, "You want nothing more than to climb in bed and pull the blankets over your head, but unfortunately, your life right now has no room for the snooze button." I thought, "Truer words have never been spoken." Maybe I can sleep through October.

I am mostly running on adrenaline, which works fine but doesn't really allow for deeper thought and planning :) which is why Triangulations has stalled. Thanks for the kind word and support, and hope all goes well for you and your friend.

(gets destracted reading new Triangulations goodness)

Oh... yea... sorry about the RL stuff... really... truely...

This just made my day! I've missed this story so much. The ending of the Lilly dream, about not having a happy ending worries me a bit but the promise of LV sex made me feel a little better.

Sorry about the RL stuff that has been going on. Wish you the best and hope everything starts looking up for you.
hiddeneloise: MissMe?hiddeneloise on August 13th, 2007 03:58 am (UTC)

Okay, that out of the way, I can see I'm going to love this chapter! :) Lilly dreams (warning about something? I'm a bit too worried about that dumped happy ending, lol.), Mac, the Wild Wild West fantasy (Logan so totally WOULD be the outlaw!) and waking up to the 80s music to do ... whatever! :) Can't wait to read the rest. Sigh.

I am sorry about the sucky stuff in your life. So very sorry about your friend! And, God, I'm glad you're okay, even if it's such a bummer that the house is damaged and the car needed repairs. I know it's a platitude (and, sadly, I can offer little else: profound, or, better yet, useful wisdom is something that eludes me), but it will get better. In the meantime, you have just made my day. And the days of many, many others. And all of us are sending good vibes. Probably not that helpful, but it couldn't hurt. I hope you are well and not only because I love your writing and can't wait to see more. I honestly hope you are well regardless.
Olivia Bliviousgertinator on August 13th, 2007 05:35 am (UTC)
Nice icon. I have missed Logan, oh yes, I have.

Good vibes always help. That's one of the reasons I posted this peek: the continued thoughts and comments from readers are little bright spots in my day, and I wanted everyone to know I'm not giving up... just temporarily stalled.

Thanks for the support and kind words. Hopefully I'll get more up soon.

That sucks about work and the fire and the car trouble but can I say how much I love you for taking the time to write us a sneak peek! Now I have to go back and figure out why Logan is going to New Mexico though. Hee. Thanks for the preview!

Wow! I just about fell over when I saw this appear on my flist. I am so pleased that you haven't forgotten this fic. I am very sorry about the horrible things happening in your RL. It always seems like those things come in bunches. I do hope that things improve and that your creativity continues to spur you on to write more. I have missed your fic. As for this update -- such a tease. Veronica's dreams kind of squick me out a bit, however, so of course, this makes me nervous. But hell, I'd pick the 80's music too, Veronica! That is a no-brainer.
(Anonymous) on August 13th, 2007 02:00 pm (UTC)
Another update I thought I'd never see! I'm happy you plan on continuing this, your fics are always well written and entertaining:).

I'm sorry to hear about RL, hopefully everything goes well.

All the best,

WeHo M.afrocurl on August 13th, 2007 03:31 pm (UTC)
I'm an ass and didn't leave better fb yesterday. I'm sure you know that I love this, but I was trying to be a nice cousin and it looked weird for me to be reading something on my cell.

I also forgot to say that I'm sorry RL is kicking your ass. I haven't asked Trixx about you in ages because I wasn't sure she knew and she's been so busy, too.

Now, to get back to the nitty of this fic: that opening conversation with Mac and Veronica is funny and sets up so much of the tone that I've missed in this piece. It's light, but with a hint of something not quite right floating around. To that end, the fact that Mac has to help Dick here is making me giggle.

I think I've grown immune to the creepy dreams you give Veronica, but I'm so interested in what Lilly is trying to tell Veronica about.

To end, of course, you have to go and add that little bit of sex at the end and that can't help but put me in a good mood. I hope life settles down enough and you can get this out sooner rather than later.

i am so happy for the sneak peek i love it i really cannot wait for the whole chapter and more.

Yay! Sneak peak! You're sneak peak is as long as other's chapters are *lol* I really really really love this fic! So happy you posted something. Can't wait to see what Lilly was trying to tell Veronica. *sigh* It's so good to read a healthy V and a healthy Logan in a healthy relationship now that the show is over. Awesome fic!

I hope RL gets quieter soon. Sorry to hear about the fire! I wish you good luck with everything!
