Part 9

"Ah, now this is the life. A nice slow evening at home, cuddled in with wife #1 and wife #2, watching old scary movies on the telly." Logan stretched his long legs down the couch, making himself comfortable. He reached out a hand and petted first Veronica and then Felicia with exactly the same condescending motion. Veronica made an insulted face that she was getting the same treatment as the feline.

"The telly?" Veronica smirked. "Are you trying to pretend to have some class by using British slang?"

"I have plenty of class, as any discerning person can tell." Logan made no effort to hold in the burp that was rising due to the weight of his many wives resting on top a lovely dinner from Luigi's. He let it out loudly, and managed a few symphonic tones as well.

"Ewww." Veronica punched him lightly before snuggling into his side. "Class all the way."

"Mroar," said Felicia, opening one eye and making it clear that her nap was not to be disturbed again. Veronica would have almost thought the little furball was agreeing with her, except Felicia was never on her side. Especially if it was against Logan. Though the two had definitely come to a truce of sorts, and had even been known to cuddle on occasion when there was no chance of being observed. They had to keep up appearances for the man of the house. He was very invested in their continued rivalry.

"Ah, my girls." Logan sighed in contentment, and focused on the movie. The Hitcher. Given his choice, they would be watching something with Jimmy Stewart, or maybe something with a XXX rating, but Veronica needed her violence and mayhem. "Ever notice Rutger Hauer always gets wet? I wonder if it's in his rider or something."

"Huh?" Veronica knew there could never be commentary free silence while watching a movie with Logan, but this was one of his more bizarre comments. "What do you mean?"

"Ladyhawke, the Hitcher, Blade Runner, Buffy the Vampire Slayer... the host of movies in which he plays a Nazi... Batman Begins... Somehow, the dramatic action always happens in a rainstorm. I just wonder if it's in his contract, you know, like a no-nudity clause or like Cybill Shephard always getting the diffusion filter." Logan stroked his chin thoughtfully.

"I think he had an umbrella in Batman Begins..." countered Veronica, not really caring, but curious to hear Logan's defense.

"No, No, that was Micheal Caine with the umbrella. Rutger Hauer was standing in the rain while he was speaking to them. Even in the post apocalyptic desert movie he managed to get some of the rare and precious drinking water dumped on him." Logan waved dramatically at the dripping vision of Rutger Hauer menacing C. Thomas Howell on the television. "See? Always. Wet."

Veronica studied her husband thoughtfully. "You are weird."

"Time spent in Hollywood does that to a person," shrugged Logan. "It's a town full of crazy people. The kind of people who would have it in their contracts that they need to always get wet." He waved toward the screen for further emphasis.

"How's that going by the way?" Veronica asked carefully. Logan hadn't been back to LA since his near blow up, and she had been monopolizing conversations with her fears about Kane software. She suspected he had been relieved to have a distraction, and had avoided all mention of the latest script revisions.

"They want to make Dell a guy and have her be Rita's love interest," he snorted. He eyed his wife thoughtfully. "You wouldn't leave me for Mac would you, honey?" He cuddled her close as she turned to stare at him. "I could do some blue highlights if it meant you would stay with me."

"But that would change everything. They can't do that, can they?" Veronica was appalled. It had all seemed so easy, when they had first talked about a Rita movie. Peter Jackson wanted to direct and he would keep it true to story, bring a three dimensional Rita to life. It was a fun idea, thrilling even. But it seemed that every executive in movieland wanted to put a mark on "The Most Anticipated Movie of the Decade." And that seemed to mean stupid alterations ad naseum.

"No, they can't do that. Ruthie negotiated me veto power, and changing Dell's gender is definitely getting the big N-O." Logan sighed. "But they are determined to have Rita get it on, and it's really pissing me off. It's supposed to be her and Back-up against the world." He ran a hand through his hair. Rita had been his vicarious Veronica, but now that he had Veronica, he seemed to be losing Rita. "They had a scene written that implied... Rita and Earwig..." He couldn't even finish the sentence.

It was funny, because of course Rita wasn't Veronica and Earwig wasn't Weevil, but the thought made Logan's gut tighten in jealousy just the same. There had been plenty of times when Weevil had stood guard over Veronica, protecting her from all sorts of nasties including Logan himself. Logan had seen the unaddressed attraction that flickered between his truelove/nemesis and the man who had ended up as his best man, and he had been okay with it. He had even written Earwig as crushing on Rita. But no way in hell would he let Rita reciprocate. No way in hell. Logan's arms tightened possessively around his wife.

"How broke would we be if we killed the deal?" asked Veronica seriously. "It isn't worth this."

"Hmmm," murmured Logan, kissing her hair. It made the pain ease just to hear Veronica say that. She was willing to give up their comfortable life to save Rita. She really did love him with all her heart. "Do you think Keith and Alicia would let us have the guest bedroom?"

"Seriously?" Veronica was shocked. "Could they take it all?" A thought hit her. "Could they take Athena?" she whispered.

"No. They can't touch Athena. But they could clean out my bank account, or at least try. It'd probably end up in a settlement that left us poorer and locked me out of all future movie deals. As if I'd be heartbroken at that." Logan snorted sardonically. Accepting the movie deal had only been a ploy to keep Veronica safe. He had no need to see Rita on the big screen. "Anyway, I'll have to work it out. Felicia would eat poor Phobie, and your Dad would never forgive us." Phobie seemed to be gaining ten pounds a week, but Logan would still put his money on his feisty feline if it came down to a battle.

"When do you go back?" Veronica studied her husband. The negotiations with Hollywood triggered so many things in him, she had a hard time divining his deeper feelings. The more troubled he was, the more he covered with the joking facade. She could tell this was hitting him hard, but she didn't know if there was any way to make it better.

"I pretty much threw out everything they had and I told them to read the book and try again." Logan sighed. "They are pushing to get this going, but they are the ones holding it up. Thank God for Ruthie. It's in the contract that they can't start filming until I approve a first draft of the whole script. Most movies like this, they start filming with only a 'treatment' and some pages and that's why the end product is crap. Once they start filming, the money already spent is leverage against changes. But thanks to Ruthie, they can't pull that on me. I'm not letting them start until I know they can do it right."

Logan breathed in deeply, tried to relax. "I told them they had a month to give me something worth reading or I would be talking to my lawyers. Landry and I will go head to head if that's what it takes." Charles Landry was the studio exec who had pinned his career to the Rita movie, and seemed to have developed a need to make Logan submit to his will. Landry didn't understand that after growing up with Aaron Echolls, Logan was not willing to submit to anyone. Especially not anyone with over styled hair and capped teeth.

"Oh, Logan." Veronica knew Logan wasn't bluffing, and things could get very ugly, very fast. "Tell me as soon as you know the date, I'll come with you if I can."

Logan smiled, the kind of deep grin that transformed his whole face. Veronica, his little warrior, was going to come fight by his side. The thought stirred him, his heart... and his lower regions.

"We could hike up to the Hollywood sign," he whispered in her ear. Veronica shivered at the sudden change in topic and the heavily suggestive tone his voice had taken on. "I've always wanted to add my own 'oooooh' to one of the 'O's."

"You mean..." Veronica laughed at the idea, but couldn't deny the little tendrils of heat uncurling in her belly at the thought. "You wanna be the one who puts the 'wood' in Hollywood?"

"Exactly," Logan's voice had gotten hoarse with his arousal. "Remember how you wanted Larry to fuck you on the table? So you would think of it every time you had dinner with your husband?" Logan writhed against Veronica, and the evidence of his excitement was obvious. "Imagine what you would be thinking every time you saw that ubiquitous Hollywood logo? I can guarantee it would make my trips to LA more fun." He punctuated the thought by sucking that special little hollow at the side of Veronica's neck. Veronica hissed out a reaction and bucked against him.

The movement upset the sleeping cat and she opened her eyes to glare at them. Logan laughed. "Better get out while you can, Fifi, 'cause the rides only going to get bumpier from here."

Felicia turned her glare on Veronica for a full minute, as if to say it was all her fault, especially the humiliating diminutive,'Fifi', then stalked off with a tense, "Mweff."

"Now why was that my fault?" asked Veronica as Logan rolled them so he could be on top. "You started it."

"Ahhhh. But I can do no wrong," smirked Logan, sliding his hands under Veronica's shirt, ready to prove his point. He caught her snarky reply in his mouth as he took her lips in a hungry kiss. "Don't answer that now... give me a little time to convince you..."

Veronica capitulated surprising quickly.

"Mac, my dear. To what do I owe the pleasure of this call?" Veronica paused, and a little worried crease formed in her forehead. "This is a pleasure call right? We don't have a crisis on our hands?"

Mac laughed. "No crisis, yet." She took a deep breath. "But I've decided to quit my job and form my own company. In Neptune."

"You what???" Veronica wasn't sure which bit of news shocked her the most. "You are coming back to Neptune?" Okay, that one won hands down. Not that it was a bad thing, just that she would have thought it more likely to see the Devil's name engraved on the Stanley Cup than to see Mac back in Neptune permanently.

"Well, it's not Silicon Valley, but it does have Kane Software and Aimes Electronics and a few other smaller boutique programming agencies. It would be enough of a market for me to get started, and I'd still have contacts back here. And it'll put me closer to... Egon."

"Egon" was Matt Roberts' code name, after Egon Spengler, the brains behind the Ghostbusters technology. Mac and Roberts had named their antidote after the movie, since the Kane product was called the Silver Ghost, and that had started a whole series of goofy aliases, including "slimergrams" for letters and calling Mac's Bug the Ecto-Cruiser.

"Really?" asked Veronica, intrigued. "And that's a big consideration?" Had her Mackie found love at last? It was about time.

"Stop that," said Mac, and Veronica could feel the force of the eye roll across the phone line. "It's just that bustin' makes us feel good," Mac quoted wryly. "And it would be better if we could actually meet in person sometimes."

"Bustin'. Is that what the kids are calling it these days?" teased Veronica.

"Veronica!" blustered Mac, and Veronica could picture the tinge of pink sweeping over her cheeks.

"You don't think you're taking this Ghostbusters thing a little too far?" Veronica asked, eyebrows raised. "You never did tell me your name."

"I'm Janine. After the secretary," Mac's tone was a little sheepish. "It was a natural. She's the only girl to ever put on a bustin' suit."

"Why not Dana? You deserve to be more than a side character," questioned Veronica curiously, noting that if her memory served, the secretary had a crush on Egon. Mac was clearly avoiding that part, which made it all the better. Veronica was holding that tidbit for future teasing.

"You're Dana. She was the key, after all. And Logan's Venkman." Mac giggled at the thought of Logan as Bill Murray's smarmy charmer. She wasn't going to comment on Duncan's resemblance to the creepy Rick Moranis character. Mac had never particularly liked Duncan, though she had also never really gotten to know him. "I don't want to be a lead. I prefer the life of semi-anonymous tech support."

"So this company..." Veronica worried at how much her needs were altering her friend's life. "You were planning it already, right?"

"Yes, Veronica," assured Mac in a sing song voice like a little kid would use on his mother. "I have actually been saving up for a while, getting ready to make this move. There is a big market for tech security and I am quite good at it. I have a couple programs I have been developing on my own, and with my new foray into... bustin'... I thought it was time. I wasn't originally planning on doing it out of Neptune, but when I thought about it, it just made sense."

"You can stay in our guest bedroom until you get a place..." offered Veronica, sure that Logan would agree.

"Are you kidding? Stay in the PDAest household ever?" Mac made gagging noises on the other end of the line. "One week with the happiest couple alive and you would find me in the bath tub with slit wrists."

"Hey!" said Veronica, slightly offended, though she couldn't really regret being considered part of the happiest couple alive. "We're better than your parents, aren't we?"

"Maybe a little," conceded Mac. "But luckily a brotha hooked me up. Wallace hasn't found a housemate yet, and we decided that we suit nicely."

"You and Wallace?" Veronica knew the two got along, but had always thought of them each as more her friends. It was a little weird to think they had a relationship that didn't involve Veronica. "Does that mean you told Wallace about this before you called me?" Veronica asked suspiciously. She tamped down that unreasonable little twinge of jealousy one gets when one is left out in a circle of friends.

Mac sighed. "Actually, he called me to talk about Gina." Mac paused. Wallace and Gina hadn't exactly broken up, but things were tense between them. Wallace was trying to keep exactly how tense from Veronica, and Mac didn't really want to be the one who gave up the details. Mac quickly returned to her original topic. "He mentioned that he still had not found a satisfactory roommate, and I offered to co-habitate. It's a nice place, and close to the office space I was looking at. Bonus at knowing he's easy to get along with, and I like his friends. Especially the one who makes the cookies."

Veronica smiled at the teasing tone in Mac's voice. It would be good to have the blue haired wonder back in town. "All right. How long do I have before the Welcome cookies need to be baked?"

"A week. I'll have to travel back up here a few times as I finish the projects I'm on, but I've already given notice and I can do most of my work commuting online." Now that the decision was made, Mac was anxious to get the whole thing rolling.

"Wow. That soon?" Veronica whistled. "Well, it'll be good to have you here. And I'm sure Athena will have plenty of reasons to make use of your talents."

"Does that mean you are actually going to pay me with that green paper stuff?" asked Mac brightly. "That would be a change."

"I thought you liked my cookies," pouted Veronica. "Anyway, haven't you heard? The tall, dark and handsome I claimed with a ball and chain? He's loaded. So yeah, we can work out a deal for the green stuff."

"Awesome." Mac smiled. "Neptune, here I come."

"Workin' late when you have such a lovely wife at home?" Duncan's voice was a soft-edged drawl and Logan knew immediately Duncan had been drinking. Heavily.

"Where's Lilly?" Logan asked, concerned. Damn Duncan if he ruined all of Logan's hard work with a drunk and disorderly that fell into child neglect. And just when Logan was starting to like him again.

"Took a long weekend with the Mannings," Duncan slurred, inviting himself into the office and slouching onto the couch. He pulled out a flask and waved it at Logan. "You should have a drink, man... you are too fucking uptight."

"Charlotte's with them?" Logan asked sharply, ignoring the flask. Charlotte was a state approved neutral observer Logan had hired for Lilly's supervised visits. She was also Carmen's second cousin, and her husband had been laid off recently. A weekend with the Mannings would put some needed cash in their bank account, and Logan trusted her to keep little Lilly safe.

"Your favorite watchdog is sunning herself in Tahoe as we speak. And my little girl is probably having a great time. They bought her a jet-ski for the trip." Duncan's comments were layered with resentment and Logan was not sure who it was aimed at, the Mannings or himself.

Duncan was more of a puzzle each day. The years had not treated him well, and he was not the sunny if slightly weak-willed boy Logan remembered. Duncan also couldn't seem to decide if he wanted to kill Logan off and take over his life, or if he wanted Logan back as his best friend. Logan could relate to the ambiguity; he often wasn't sure whether he wanted to hug Duncan and help him straighten his life out, or just strangle him and quietly dispose of the body.

Duncan tried to stand, but his legs were like water... or was that whisky? beneath him. Logan knew how that felt, and a little bit of sympathy slipped back in. Lilly was all Duncan had, and the Mannings were trying their damnedest to seduce her away.

"Do I need to call someone to come get you?" Logan surveyed Duncan, and wondered if there were any of his friends who didn't need a bottle to get through life. Duncan looked like shit and there was no denying it. And, Logan realized, there was no one to come get Duncan. So far the Senior Kanes had stayed in Napa, incommunicado. Logan wasn't sure if that made things better or worse. Duncan was all alone, especially with Lilly out of town. Logan remember having alcohol as his only friend, and it softened his feelings towards Duncan. "Come on. I'll give you a ride home."

Duncan tried to focus his bleary eyes on Logan. He wished that Logan weren't so damned proper and stable all the time now. He hardly recognized his old friend inside this model citizen. Except that wasn't true. He recognized Logan from the feelings he incited. In Duncan's whole life, he had rarely felt the kind of easy camaraderie that rolled off of Logan. Likewise the intensity, the safety even, of knowing Logan had his back.

And then there was the rivalry for Veronica. The old animosity stirred in Duncan, and this time he knew he was on the short end. Veronica had chosen Logan for the Happy Ending, and Duncan still couldn't quite get his head around it. Logan wasn't supposed to be Veronica's knight in shining armor. If Lilly had lived, things would have been different, right? Logan would have had Lilly, and Duncan could have kept Veronica. Except Lilly had betrayed Logan by sleeping with Aaron Echolls and ended up dead. And she had destroyed all of their happy endings in the process.

Duncan's booze pickled brain latched onto the thought of Aaron Echolls just as Logan was strapping him into the car. There was something he had been wanting to say to Logan for years, but it was hard to find the words. He wished once more that Logan would slide off his damn pedestal and get drunk and dirty like the rest of them. It was a measure of how little he knew about Logan these days that he did not understand how disastrous a slide that would be.

"I'm sorry about your Dad, man..." slurred Duncan.

Logan laughed bitterly as he started up the car. "That encompasses a lot, DK. He was a sorry bastard, to be sure." Logan glanced sideways at his drunk and disorderly sometimes friend. He was having a hard time figuring out just what the hell Duncan wanted, and it seemed to change from moment to moment. The look he was currently sporting seemed to ask for absolution and forgiveness. "Anyway, why are you sorry? He killed your sister."

Duncan slouched against the car door and stared at Logan, his whole posture beseeching forgiveness. There was dead silence between them, the hum of the engine a soothing contrast to the tension building in Logan's brain. He had a tickling feeling in the back of his head, but he did not want to recognize it, did not want to let the thought fully form.

"I couldn't let him get away with it," mumbled Duncan. "You know that, right? I couldn't let him just go free..."

"You're the one who hired Weidman, not Celeste," Logan said in wonder, his brain spiraling. He had always figured it was a Kane responsible, a little bit of Biblical justice, but he had never figured Duncan as the point man.

Duncan nodded miserably. "I thought it would make me feel better, but it only made it worse... I was thinking of Lilly at first, but then all I could think of was you..."

"You did me a favor, man," Logan said tightly, trying to reign in his swirling emotions. "Being acquitted just drove him over the edge, made him feel invincible. He even threatened Veronica." Logan looked over to Duncan, relieved to see he had passed out against the door after his confession. Good. Logan wasn't sure he could have handled more of that conversation.

Logan tried to concentrate on the road and not on the pounding in his head. He gripped the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white. He had to get Duncan home, then he would go back to the beach house, put his head in Veronica's lap and explode. It was good to know she'd be there to hold him together.

Veronica looked up from her magazine as Logan slammed the door. She studied him for a second, felt the strange energy vibrating around him. Felicia opened one eye from where she was snuggled into Veronica's side. "Mroar?" she asked, standing up, ready to put on the usual rivalry show for Logan.

Veronica shook her head, worried. "Something's wrong with Daddy," said Veronica, biting her lip. "Let's go check on him, shall we?"

Veronica crossed over to where Logan stood, braced against the coat closet, unmoving. Felicia padded along behind her. He had started to kick his shoes off, and then just stopped, staring into space. His hands were splayed against the wall as if it was all that held him up.

"Meyeeuw?" Felicia asked, rubbing against Logan's legs. That seemed to break his trance, and he leaned down to pick her up, ended up collapsing to the floor and pulling the cat into his lap. Logan buried his nose in her fur and tried to breath through the confusion bubbling up in him. His life was entirely too fucked up to be real. Just when he thought he got a hold on things, life threw him another curve ball.

"Logan?" Veronica knelt next to him, becoming more and more worried. He had been fine when she had left him at the office only hours before. What could have possibly happened in that short period of time to totally floor him like this? "Logan, are you okay?"

Logan looked up at her, his eyes bright and a little wild. "He did it." Logan laughed semi-hysterically, and the sound gave Veronica a shiver of fear. Logan was close to the edge and she had no idea why. "Duncan did it. I never would have thought he had it in him, but I guess he did."

Veronica cursed Duncan for the millionth time since he had come back into their lives. He had no right to mess up her happiness after all of these years. "Duncan did what, sweetie?" Just tell me what he did, and then I will go cut his balls off, she thought.

"Hired Weidman... to off my... Aaron." Logan stared at her with amazement. It was all too fucked up. He had always believed the Kanes, Weidman, were responsible for Aaron's death. Even thanked them a little, at times. But to have Duncan admit it, it made it all too real. His best friend had paid a man to shoot his father in the head. He could see the news affected Veronica, too.

"Wow," she said, letting out a deep breath.

"Yeah." Logan laughed again, a hollow grating sound with no humor at all. "Life is truly stranger than fiction, isn't it? My life? The writers would have to be insane. We've been hired by my former best friend, your former boyfriend, brother to the girl who was my first love and your best friend, the girl who slept with my dad and was killed by him just shortly after her sixteenth birthday... We've been hired by him to find the guy he paid to kill my father."

The tears glittered in Logan's eyes, and Veronica pulled him tight to her, eliciting a sharp mewl of protest from the furball who had gotten comfortable in Logan's arms. Veronica loosened her hold enough that Felicia wasn't crushed, but continued to hold tight to Logan, rocking him a little as he came apart.

"We don't have to find Weidman... We can tell Duncan to shove off." Veronica stroked Logan's hair. "I don't give a rat's ass about the Kanes."

"No," Logan shook his head, still burrowed into Veronica's arms. "We need to figure out what is going on at Kane Software. We need to keep Lilly safe." Logan choked a little. "We couldn't keep our Lilly safe, but we can protect Meg and Duncan's Lilly."

"Well, then, that's what we'll do." Veronica continued to stroke Logan's head, his back, gentle soothing circles to calm him down. Felicia was purring in his arms, and that seemed to settle his emotions as well. Logan rarely broke, but when he did, it was usually quick and messy, and then he would pull himself back together with a plan and determination. He continually amazed her, with his hero complex and his huge heart and his endless ability to bounce back after even the most horrifying events. Figures he would take Little Lilly into his circle of protection, despite the sins of her father. Logan knew all about how a father's sins could be a horrible burden to bear.

Logan sat at his desk, examining the paperwork for a new Athena case. He was probably going to have to fly out to New Mexico to deal with some of the details, and the thought of another trip was not putting him in a good mood. Why couldn't the world let him just cuddle in with his wife and cat? He sighed. Athena had been his idea, and it was up to him to deal with things, including travel, when it came up. He just wished he could take Veronica along a little more often.

"Mr. E?" came Tori's voice over the intercom, interrupting his thoughts. "Phone call on line one."

"Who is it?" Logan asked, rubbing his forehead. If it was Duncan, he planned to be out of the office. He was still assimilating the big revelation of their last meeting.

"He says his name is Dick, he's a friend of yours?" Tori's voice was uncertain. "It sounds like he is in some sort of trouble."

"Oh, shit." God only knows what kind of trouble Dick is in, thought Logan. His head started to throb. "All right, Tori. Thanks." He paused. "Hey, Tori? Wanna run out and get us some coffee and gingerbread men? I think I may need it. And get me a double shot. I'll pay you back later."

"Sure thing, boss." Tori clicked out, and Logan smiled. He could always count on the midget. He glanced over to the safe in the corner. Tori had gotten some magnetic poetry pieces shaped like ransom note letters and she liked to leave him funny messages on the dark, flat metal expanse of the safe door. Today's said,"Death to Duncan." He'd have to rearrange it before Veronica saw, but it still brought a ray of sunshine into an otherwise dreary day. Yep, the midget was a good addition to the team.

He sighed and steeled himself for the call from Dick. He picked up the handset, pressed the blinking red button, and said, "This is Logan."

"Dude. I need your help." Dick's voice was hesitant and rough. "I'm - I'm in way over my head, and I don't..." He paused for a minute, seemingly to collect his thoughts. Logan tried to stay calm, but a part of his mind was calculating how much damage Dick Casablancas must have caused that he needed to call Logan for help.

"I'll help you if I can, Dick. What's up?" Logan's voice clearly held reservations.

"I left Mimi." Dick let the statement hang in the air dramatically, but Logan swallowed in relief. At least Dick hadn't burned down any hotels or killed anyone in a hit and run.

"So what do you need? A good divorce attorney? A place to stay? I gave up my loft, but Trina has the penthouse..." Logan doodled on the pad in front of him.

"No, man. I need a lot more than that." Dick paused again. Logan was startled by the desperation in his voice. Dick Casablancas had made a career out of never being upset about anything. He floated through life on a wave of alcohol, surfing the troubles like storm waves, staying high above the turbulence.

"What's going on, Dick?" asked Logan seriously, wondering if he had it in himself to help this former best friend through what were clearly life-altering bad times. He already had one questionable friend in need that he had taken under his wing; he wasn't sure he had the energy to add another. Though at least the Dick/Veronica friction was of an entirely different sort.

"I... uh, dude, I knocked Mindy up. And I want to do right by her, so I, you know, I told Mimi that I wanted a divorce." Dick chuckled, and the sound was incredibly bitter. Logan had never heard anything like it coming from his easy going friend. Suddenly, Logan realized something else. DIck's words were sharp and clear.

Dick had bypassed alcohol through the entire wedding, and here he was in the crisis of his life and he was sober. In the years that they had hung around together in New York, Logan had become accustomed to Dick's words always having the soft, slurred edge of a practiced alcoholic, but now, now the only thing blurring his tone was panic. That alone was enough to give Logan a shot of adrenaline, and he focused his full attention on Dick's words.

"We knew, we knew she'd fire Mindy, probably blackball her... and I don't have anything of my own... but we thought..." Dick paused, seemed to choke. "Dude. I had no idea what a slash and burn Mimi was capable of." His rough breathing was audible over the phone. "She's accused Mindy of embezzling, had all her accounts frozen. Word is out on us, and no one will help. Please, man." Dick's voice cracked. "I know I said some bad shit about Veronica before, and we were a little sketch at the wedding, but you still in invited me, so I know some part of you cares..."

"What do you want me to do? Wire money? Hire lawyers?" Logan had his pad in front of him and he was making lists.

"The most important thing is to get the charges against Mindy dropped. Think the Mini Detective can bury the hatchet long enough to pull some of her magic?" Dick's voice had a little of his old tone to it, though the cheerfulness was forced.

Logan swallowed. Getting Veronica directly involved would require much persuading, but the situation was desperate enough that he was willing to try. Especially if Dick was trying to stay sober.

"I'll ask her. I'm sure we'll be able to figure something out." There was something else more important on Logan's mind. "How are you doing?" Logan asked, wondering how to get real answers. Might as well be blunt. "You sound... sober." There was an extremely long pause.

"I'm trying." Dick said wryly, his voice full of pain. "It ain't easy, dude. But you know you've always been my idol, so I just keep telling myself, if that asshat Logan could do it, so can you." Logan laughed. Dick got more serious. "There have been a few bad nights... since... but, what it does to Mindy, I can't - I just - " Dick took a deep breath. "I hate to do it, dude, but I think I gotta grow up." He chuckled, but there was little humor in the sound.

"Are you doing AA? Do you have a sponsor?" Logan tried to temper his concern. He knew from personal experience nothing makes an alcoholic want to hide more than an overly helpful friend.

"Sort of." Dick was clearly uncomfortable with where the conversation was heading. "Mimi hooked me up with some rehab shit before - when I first decided... but lately, it's been a little..."

"It'll get easier, Dick," Logan reassured, hoping he was right. "Let me give you Pete's number. You met him at the wedding. He helped me through a lot of bad times, I'm not sure I could have done it without him."

"Yeah, thanks, man. He was a good guy. And thanks for helping us out. I'll find a way to pay you back." Dick laughed, and this time it had a little humor. "Maybe we'll even name the kid after you. It'll give us a lot of options."

Yay! Thanks for the new chapter. I am constantly amazed at the twists and turns you provide in the plot. I'm sorry but I love Dick. Are you going to redeem him? In real life I'd never want to know Dick, but I can't help but erase his role in V's rape in my mind.
Olivia Bliviousgertinator on January 28th, 2007 12:05 am (UTC)
I know what you mean. Dick is such an awful person, and yet he is so skillfully played by RH that it is hard not to like him.

I might redeem Dick, a little bit. *grins* You'll just have to wait and see.

Love this beginning... a sense of normalcy for the Veronica and Logan. The added bit of Felicia/Veronica rivalry show is sweet.

Hope to see Mac/Roberts later on. Interesting bit of Wallace and Dick's line - "It ain't easy, dude. But you know you've always been my idol, so I just keep telling myself, if that asshat Logan could do it, so can you." - perfect.

Wonder what would happen with Duncan... and I love Tori!

You have no idea how glad I am to have updated! I really need to get myself back on a regular schedule! But I promise, I have been working on future plot bits, so eventually, it will be easy and frequent posting. I hope.

Loved this update! But that's no surprise. Great job, Gert. Still don't like Duncan in this. I soo hope you redeem Dick a lil bit. I love Ryan Hansen..so that makes me sorta like Dick too. Oh..you're bringing Mac back to Neptune! Yay!

Did I mention I don't like Duncan..cause I don't. He's a jealous lil shit that should crawl in a hole. I really don't trust him. Oh..the stupid Hollywood people better not mess up the Rita movie.

I think that's all. I loved it...you're doing a great job! It's a good counteract to Trixx's Finite. Got my darkness...got my not really fluffy but kinda normal happy LoVe :)
Olivia Bliviousgertinator on January 28th, 2007 06:58 am (UTC)
I love that I am trying to write a somewhat sympathetic Duncan and every body still hates him *grin*

Don't get too set on this being your happy fic. There is a reason Trixx and I get along... dark times are coming. *evil grin*

Yay! Your RL let you go long enough to post an update! Where do I send the thank you note?

Cool chapter as always -- can't believe Duncan owned up to the hit on Aaron, but all of this is making me concerned about Logan. Seems like everything is getting way to stressful for him and when/if he breaks, it could be ugly. He needs to find someone else besides Veronica to help him out. He needs a really good assistant who could travel or whatever. You know, California is nice, think Athena is hiring? I could relocate -- I'm sure my family wouldn't mind.... But very like Logan to be looking out for Lilly. The way you have characterized him, it seems like he gets personally invested with the people he is helping -- Carmen's cousin, Tori, Lilly -- not to mention the friends he is already invested in. Nice to have Dick join the party. It will be interesting to see what Veronica thinks.

Looking forward to the next installment. Hopefully soon!

Hmmm. You could have something there. *evil grin*

Hopefully the new chapters will come faster than the last few. I do have a lot of plot written, but I have to get there in teh timeline.

Poor Dick. I sorta kinda feel bad for him. And I really hate Duncan right now. Bastard. How dare he try and break LoVe up again... *sigh*

Poor Logan. My poor woobie Logan. Thank god for Veronica and Felicia, the little hellcat that she is.

And yay for Mac loveness! Its reminding me of the most recent episode a bit, lol. Can't wait for more.
Moi Mobiasmoimobias on January 28th, 2007 05:14 am (UTC)
Amazing! I love how you write Duncan.... because I can both HATE him and yet get a glimpse of his Pov as well... the drunken Duncan who has wanted to say something to Logan for years....what a way to reveal that secret.

but my favorite line - "then he would go back to the beach house, put his head in Veronica's lap and explode."

Also I'm rooting for Dick's comeback. He is aptly named but lines like his to Logan about him being his "idol" is why I can't stop loving his character despite his many flaws.

Happy happy happy. I love this fic. It is seriously number one for me right now.

I was so happy to see you've brought Dick back! I shouldn't like him, but I really really do. I can't wait to see more of him.

And I really am hating Duncan. The bastard. No matter how nice he may be, I just want to hug Logan and stab Duncan. Erg, I hate him.

So glad to see that you updated, and I cannot wait until the next chapter. Soon??!!
Olivia Bliviousgertinator on January 28th, 2007 07:04 am (UTC)

I am so very amused that this seems to be the universal sentiment.

Hopefully I will have another chapter out soon. I'm working on it.

Dick's becoming less selfish. Will wonders never cease?

Great update. I volunteer to kick Duncan's ass back to Australia for you.

J'ADORE RYAN HANSEN. He just needs to smile and i love him a little more.

God people are writing V/Piz fic. I think I just died a little on the inside. Love you as always, Gertie! :D Damn i love Fifi! hahaha.
Olivia Bliviousgertinator on January 28th, 2007 06:52 am (UTC)
Yeah, just seeing the V/P designation made me throw up a little in my mouth. And yes, I know, I committed the sacriledge of writing mac/logan. But Piz???? For god's sake! I would rather read V/Lamb. I would rather read V/Back-up. (Okay, maybe not. But close!)

Actually Piz is not so bad. I hate him with an unreasonable passion that borders on what I feel for Duncan, but it's not his fault. After RT refered to him as a "Lloyd Dobbler type" I was so appalled that he just never got a fair chance in my eyes. I was actually praying he would turn out to be the Hearst Rapist. (Hey, he wore Duncan's clothes and came from Beaverton. Was it just coincidence that he was tied in with the two previous rapists?)

Hmm. Piz. I hope he dies a violent death.

I almost hated you for posting this before I needed to nap, but now I'm happy that I've read it.

I loved the calm moments between LV, especially when contrasted to Logan's breakdown after Duncan's reveal.

I swear to G-d that I want to kick Duncan more and more as you write this--he's so self-absorbed in his life that he can't see what he's doing to LV and it hurts so much.

I feel really bad for Dick, too, and well, I hope that Veronica is convinced to help him out.

I really loved this chapter. IA with what everyone else is saying lol, Duncan is particularly annoying.

And with the way these to have sex, I'm just waiting for Veronica to get pregnant lmao.

Yay an update! I love this story. And I really don't like Duncan in this. While reading this I was thinking 'Thank god Donut is done in canon'.
I'm not sure that a Dick jr the second isn't the worst thing that could happen to humanity, but Dick seems to be trying so I'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt. Dick is such an aweful character but I love Ryan so I kinda like Dick most of the time too.

I love that V and Felicia are getting along but hiding it from Logan. I actually laughed at that. I really hope you'll let V get pregnant at some point. *g*

Btw I *love* how you work Wallace and Mac into this. Even in canon, they don't show V anywhere enough with her friends.

You're so amazing. I love this.

Oh, and this, she would have thought it more likely to see the Devil's name engraved on the Stanley Cup than to see Mac back in Neptune permanently. is the best version of that whole "when Hell freezes over" thing I've encountered.
Olivia Bliviousgertinator on January 28th, 2007 04:38 pm (UTC)
Hee. My favorite was "when the Devil learns to drive a zamboni" but I've already used that. This is a close second.

Thanks for the support!
